5 pillars of Islam

The 5 pillars of Islam: understanding and deepening the foundations of practice

The five pillars of Islam are the framework of a Muslim’s life. They shape one’s relationship with Allah, with oneself and with the community, from the declaration of faith pronounced for the first time to the pilgrimage performed in Mecca. Understanding them in depth gives one’s practice a solid, conscious and grounded foundation.

This collection brings together books in French devoted to the five pillars: their conditions, their rules, their spirituality and their meaning in a Muslim’s daily life.

What are the 5 pillars of Islam?

The five pillars of Islam are:

  • The shahada: the declaration of faith, “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His messenger”
  • The salat: the prayer, performed five times a day
  • The zakat: the obligatory almsgiving on wealth (zakat al-mal)
  • The fast of Ramadan: abstaining from food, drink and marital relations from dawn to sunset
  • The hajj: the pilgrimage to Mecca, obligatory once in a lifetime for those who are able

Each of these pillars has an abundant Islamic literature, from practical manuals to spiritual reflections, available in French in this collection.

What are the 5 pillars of Islam in order, in Arabic?

In Arabic, the five pillars are named as follows, in the order classically established by scholars:

  • Ash-shahada: the profession of faith
  • As-salat: the prayer
  • Az-zakat: the obligatory almsgiving
  • Sawm Ramadan: the fast of Ramadan
  • Al-hajj: the pilgrimage

This order is the one given in the well-known hadith narrated by Ibn ‘Umar, found in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, which defines Islam as resting on these five pillars.

Prayer: a pillar in its own right

The salat is the most recurrent pillar in a Muslim’s life: five times a day, every day. Books on prayer cover both the rules of purification (tahara) and the spiritual dimension of recollection, khushu’ and presence of the heart in the salat.

Learning to pray correctly is often the first need of new Muslims and of young people looking for structure. This collection offers guides suited to every level.

Ramadan, zakat and hajj: pillars that go beyond ritual

The fast of Ramadan is far more than abstaining from food: it is a month of spiritual retreat, generosity and closeness to the Quran. Zakat anchors the Muslim in an ethic of solidarity. The hajj, finally, is a unique experience of transformation, often lived as a turning point in a life.

The books in this collection approach these pillars from legal, historical and spiritual angles.

Going further in Islamic knowledge

The five pillars belong to a broader framework of religious knowledge. To deepen the disciplines around them — usul al-fiqh, tafsir, Quranic sciences or the Arabic language — our Islamic Sciences (Al-‘Ulum) collection offers reference works to continue your journey as a student of knowledge.
