In the introduction to his book At-Tibyān, Imam an-Nawawī (636 - 676 H.) writes:
"Groups of eminent and distinguished men have composed books on the merit of reciting the Qur'an, which are known to those who are endowed with intelligence and forbearance. But the efforts to memorize them, or even to read them, have diminished, and there are only a few individuals endowed with understanding who benefit from them. However, I have noticed that the people of our city of Damascus - may Allah the Most High protect and safeguard it and all the Muslim countries - take great care of reciting the Glorious Qur'an, whether it is learning it or teaching it, for the purpose of exposition or study, in groups or individually..."
